The Ten Essentials
The following items are generally considered to be the “essentials” that every person should have when making extended outdoor treks. These items are the least you should be carrying (in addition to your water, food, clothes on your back).
Map
Compass
Sunglasses and sunscreen
Extra food and water
Extra clothing, appropriate to changing weather
Headlamp / flashlight
First aid supplies
Firestarter
Matches
Knife
Rain Gear
And the last and final item, occasionally forgotten but never optional:
Common Sense, no matter where you are.
